More and more olympic athletes have turned to neurofeedback to give them the edge they need. With sports that sometimes come down to fractions of a second, more strength may not get them in the winner’s circle. Nor will adding more hours to an already exhaustive training schedule. Often the difference is that extra mental edge.
But how does this apply to you? After all, you’re most likely not an olympic athlete. Can neurofeedback still help you?
The answer, of course, is yes. In fact, it’d probably help you MORE than an olympic athlete. Because let’s be honest, you have more room for improvement! 🙂
It doesn’t matter what sport you play. Golf, tennis, running, or basketball. And if you want to call poker, spelling bees and dominoes “sports” (they ARE on ESPN, right) neurofeedback with NeurOptimal can mostly certainly help get you to the next level!
Boost Your Mental Game
Here in Cleveland, we love our sports teams. We especially remember the baseball teams of the 1990s. One of the heroes of that era was the catcher, Sandy Alomar.
Sandy played for Cleveland for 11 years, and was good every year. But 1997?!?! Take a look at these stats:
Stat | Other Years | 1997 |
---|---|---|
Batting Avg. | .271 | .324 |
Slugging Pct. | .365 | .545 |
Doubles | 14 | 37 |
Home runs | 6 | 21 |
What on earth was going on? We suspect a couple of things:
1. Research on brain plasticity shows that with training, we can improve our brain’s processing speed. We wonder whether this happened spontaneously (without intentional training) for Sandy, so that those 98 MPH fastballs seemed to take just a bit longer to get to the plate.
2. The great psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi is noted for his research on “flow”: the state of effortless high performance occasionally achieved by athletes and others. When you’re in flow, your brain’s resources are almost completely devoted to the task at hand…none are squandered on distractions, worry, self-doubt.
Fast mental processing and flow would certainly help explain Sandy’s amazing season.
Can neurofeedback help you with processing speed and flow? Yes—these are the very things that NeurOptimal neurofeedback does best! Soccer team AC Milan, the 2006 Italian World Cup team, professional golfers and basketball players have all used neurofeedback and credit it with improved performance.
